Sound check
First impression is how elegantly Behringer techs designed such analog amp model with precisely tones and unbeatable price. Although we suspect that the design copies the famous Tech21’s SansAmp model, Trademark series amp, the folks at Behringer surely know how to add extra sparkly features and offer the price virtually everyone can afford. And they seems accomplished the goal.
The amp collection is not as big as V-Amp and stuff, but this monster really surpassed digital amp modeling in term of warm and feels of the tube amp.
The connection provided offer broad range of applications; you can jam with CD-player or drum machines, practice silently at midnight with headphones, abuse it in studio as direct out to multi-track recorder, insert wah pedal or effects, or use it as monitor amp in the stage connecting to FOH via Line-out ensuring consistent tone shapes.
Feed by a strat, this amp exhibits slightly noise, which is natural in other amps, even in high class one, since single coil tends to produce noise higher than humbucker. Dialing the clean channel, you can shoot Fender Twin Reverb sound flawlessly. Switching to high gain with bridge humbucker, you can get early metallica, megadeth, slayer, ratm, pantera, virtually any hairy rock band and alike in the 80’s with ease; in short, this amp successfully emulates Marshall Crunch stack machines such as JCM and Plexi.
Tweaking presence/gain knob to vary high boost/cut in californian mode and ready to enter the grunting nu-metal scenes by emulating modern metal dominated by 7-strings heavy blast riff a la Mesa/Boogie famous Rectifier, thanks to Dynamizer circuitry added in pre-amp section to boost lively bone-crushing punch.
Journey to tweed/clean/uk and british/clean/uk mode, the bluesy cheese and crunchy marshallesque tones can be obtained simply by varying gain knob. Don’t be afraid to explore any possibilities of model/gain/speaker mode and presence knob to get the sound that you want.
The downsides are the effects. Without MIDI controller like FCB1010, you only have access to one effect parameter, which is okay if you’re not effect-maniac and depend on reverb/delay only during voyage of tones. Wah is not good as Vox’s ToneLab or wah pedal but considering the price offered, just take it as compliment from Behringer.
Compared to Line6 Spider II 212, this amp simply kick ass. The sounds are warmer and richer, very natural rather than digitized. It puts Line6 in shame of high price and glamorous marketing ads. It close to Marshall MG’s but again, the price and features are unbeatable.
If you’re serious in recording, for instance hibernating in studio for your first demo tape or working on next album, use external effects outboard with higher quality than this amp provided. The effects mainly dedicated for live usage, I supposed, as for live situation, you don’t need killer effects since the audience will not give a shit other than moshpitting and headbanging. Built-in tuner is also winning point to relieve your pain with wobbling strings during live performance.
And if your ears think this box as quiet as pocket radios, connect its loudspeaker outputs to 4x12 cabinet to hear it roars and rumbles the room. Watch your pants rattle off.
Summary Pro: - extremely high performance/cost ratio - analog amp modeling do the job perfectly - built-in effects - low –virtually absent- noise - overall are better than Marshall MG210, Line6 Spider II 212 - tube-like sounds without hassle of changing the tube regularly
Cons: - without MIDI controller, only one effect parameter can be controlled
