a) anda menemukan ketidakcocokan dengan label lama Aquarius, apakah major label tsb menuntut perubahan sound yang lebih komersil?

You have tackle disagreement with previous major label, Aquarius, why?

Lebih tepatnya mereka menaikkan target yang harus dicapai untuk penjualan album Sucker Head

b) anda mendirikan indie label Krossover tapi berhasil mendapatkan distribusi dari jaringan Musica. mengapa label besar macam Musica bisa tertarik?

It’s cool that you established independent label, Krossover, but you also given nationwide distribution privilege from major label Musica

Waduh ini rahasia... tapi kan gue udah membuktikan bahwa di label gue yang satu lagi, RotorCorp, semuanya berjalan dengan lancar, target tercapai, dan yang paling penting adalah membina kepercayaan mereka. Bisnis adalah saling percaya kan ?       

It’s kind of business clandestine. I have proven to them that everything works in Krossover and my other label, RotorCorp, means that sales target achieved and keeping trust. Business is all about trust, right?

c) label anda RotorCorp juga menangani kompilasi v/a spt metalik klinik. tentu masing2 band gak seragam pengalamannya dalam sesi rekaman studio. bagaimana anda menyikapi tsb?

RotorCorp also handling v/a compilation such as Metalik Klinik which contains diverse bands experience in recording session. How do you handle that?

Ini adalah tugas gue sebagai produser untuk menyikapinya. Jangankan band baru, band lama aja banyak yang nggak ngerti manajemen pengisian bunyi dalam proses rekaman. Jadi gue bertugas mengatur semuanya. Mulai dari memilih studio yang cocok, engineer yang cocok, musik dasar, aransemen, pilihan sound, pilihan alat musik, pilihan mic, pengisian / dubbing, sampai mixing, sehingga semuanya berjalan sesuai target waktu dan budget.

That’s part of my job as a producer. Not only new band, some of the old ones don’t understand audio tracking management in a recording process. So I organize them, from choosing the correct studio, finding the right sound engineer, basic songwriting, arrangement, sound of choice, instrument of choice, choosing microphones, tracking/dubbing into mixing, all are kept at the track and budget.

d) posisi Hemaswara terhadap Krossover dan Rotorcorp itu bagaimana?

Can you explain a bit about Hemaswara, Krossover and RotorCorp in term of position?

Krossover dan RotorCorp adalah pemilik master, Hemaswara adalah pengedar, Musica yang mendistribusikan.

Krossover and RotorCorp is master owner. Hemaswara is retailer and Musica is distributor.


PRODUCTION
anda menerapkan digital recording dalam "Hipertensi" ya.
Talking about “Hipertensi” recording process.

a) kebanyakan musisi mengandalkan mainstream system seperti ProTools, Radar24, Sonar atau Cubase. pernahkah anda pakai offstream system yg jauh lebih murah seperti Creamware, Emagic,  atau MOTU?

Most musicians using mainstream system such as ProTools, Radar24, Sonar or Cubase. Have you ever use offstream cheaper system like Creamware, Emagic, MOTU, etc?

Karena gue belajar sound secara otodiak maka gue nggak berani resiko untuk memakai sistem yang nggak mainstream. Gue sekarang pake Nuendo (kakaknya cubase).

I learned audio engineering autodidact by myself. I don’t think taking any risk of using non mainstream system. I use Nuendo, which is Cubase big brother.

b) apakah ada pemakaian prosesor tabung di rantai jalur audio-nya?

Did you employ any tube processors in the audio chain?

Semua jalur yang masuk ke soundcard gue lewatin pre amp tabung.

All tracks go to soundcard through tube pre-amp.

c) anda pakai hardware outboard effects ataukah plug-ins?

What kind of effects did you use, hardware or plug-ins?

Semua full plug in.

All are plug-ins.

d) untuk bass dan guitar, apakah menerapkan sistem todong, direct atau kombinasi?

For stringed instruments, how did you record them?

Direct instrumen dengan efek dari plug in.

I used direct recording with plug-ins effects.

Berapa kali overdub?

How many overdub you have done?

Rhythm gitar 4 kali dengan variasi pan. vokal dan lead / riff gitar sesuai kebutuhan.

For guitar rhythm was 4 times with panning variation. Vocal and lead/riff adjusted accordingly to suit the sound character needs.

untuk tiap overdub, apakah sama settingnya atau ada yg di-"fals"kan sedikit spt tone, pitch, gain level, dsb?

When you overdub how to set the overdubbing track tone, pitch, gain level, etc?

Seting sama, gue cuma cari kerapatan sound.

It was exactly the same with overwritten track. I was pursuing solid sound density.

e) pendapat anda tentang ampli tabung vintage (Mesa/Boogie Dual/Triple Rectifier, Marshall TSL, JCM, H&K, dll)  dibanding digital amp simulator (POD, V-Amp, Genesis, GT, J-Station dll)

What do you think about vintage tube amp compared to digital amp simulator?

Gue nggak suka suara amp simulator, tapi belakangan gue coba POD cukup bagus.

I don’t like amp simulator sound, but nowadays I tried POD and it’s quite good.

f) dalam era digital sekarang banyak CD komersial yg levelnya begitu keras (hot), dibanding beberapa tahun kebelakang. pendapat anda?

In digital era, there’s seems like CD level competition, which is getting hotter than few years back.

Sebenarnya ini adalah upaya untuk mengejar gain sistem analog jaman dulu. Tapi memang gain dari saturasi pita sampai sekarang nggak bisa disimulasi oleh sistem digital. Jadilah kompresor dan limiter dipaksa untuk bekerja keras untuk mengejar gain.

Actually that is an effort to chase analog gain system popularized earlier. But analog tape saturation is hardly emulated by digital system. So compressor and limiter are driven hard to chase the gain.

g) pernahkah anda pakai tape reel analog 2 inchi di album2 terdahulu? apakah ada sesuatu yang hilang dibanding full digital system spt album sekarang? ataukah malah ada nilai plus-nya dengan full digital?

Have you used 2” analog tape reel? How was it compared to full digital domain?

3 album pertama kita pake pita 2 inch. Jika dibandingkan dengan digital yang terasa adalah perbedaan dimensi sound. Menurut orang2, sistem pita lebih warm, tapi menurut gue hanya beda dimensi dan nuansa. Perbedaan ini buat gue bisa ditolerir dengan kelebihan sistem digital yaitu adanya fasilitas edit yang tidak bisa dikalahkan oleh sistem analog.

On the first 3 albums we used 2” reel. Compared to digital, you’ll find a sound dimension difference. People said, tape is warmer but I think it’s just dimension and nuance dissimilarities. This digital “drawbacks” is forgiven by unmatched editing capabilities that digital offers compared to analog.

e) apakah Sucker Head di-endorse merk instrumen tertentu? boleh tau instrumen yg dipakai?

Are Sucker Head endorsed by specific instrument manufacturer?

Kami tidak ada kontrak dengan mek apapun. Instrumen kami : Drum Tama, gitar Ibanez, dan bass Fender.

Currently we aren’t endorsed by any. We use Tama drums, Ibanez guitar and Fender bass.


LIVE
a) dari tour tahun 2002 di monster of rock sampai opening act Helloween, apakah anda merasa ada perbaikan dan perkembangan dalam hal tatasuara live oleh perusahaan rental indonesia? sistem monitor, mixing, lighting, FOH, main speaker, side fill, dll?

From monster of rock tour in 2002 to Helloween opening act, do you feel any improvement in live sound system provided by Indonesian rental companies?

Secara umum memang berkembang pesat. Masalahnya adalah perkembangan ini tidak dapat dirasakan apabila kita main diluar kota jakarta. Terjadi kesenjangan yang sangat jauh antara peralatan yang ada di jakarta dengan yang di luar jakarta.

Generally yes. It’s greatly improved. Problem is, you can’t get it outside Jakarta. There’s big gap in live gear between Jakarta and other cities.

b) sebagai pembuka Helloween di Festival Ancol, apakah anda merasa ada perbedaan dengan main performer dalam hal: servis tata suara dan pencahayaan, kru panggung, dan respon penonton?

As a Helloween opening performer in Ancol Festival, did you feel distinguished with main performer in term of sound system, crew, lighting services?

Kita dapat fasilitas yang sama dengan Helloween, kecuali lighting. Tapi hal ini sudah cukup fair buat kita.

We got the same facilities with Helloween, except lighting. But I think it’s fair enough.

c) pernah merasa messed up di panggung? (sound jelek, monitor mati, salah pencet akord, dll) mana yang paling buruk? ada show yang paling berkesan?

Ever suffer stage fever? What’s your worst and best gig?

3 tahun pertama Sucker Head (1989-1992) kita mendapatkan banyak pengalaman panggung, setelah itu, 12 tahun kemudian (1990-sekarang) semuanya kita lalui sebagai kewajiban untuk profesionalisme kita.

Show paling berkesan adalah sekitar 1995-1997 dimana kita banyak job order dari Bandung yang saat itu sedang semarak dengan musik metal dan melahirkan istilah 'underground'. Bayangkan, 1 tahun kita bisa main 10 kali di Bandung, sampai kita dikira band Bandung.     

The first 3 years of Sucker Head journey in 1989-1992 we got lots of gig experiences. 12 years later 1990-now everything we do as compulsory professionalism.   

Most impressive shows were around 1995-1997 when we got so many jobs from Bandung, where metal became popular and that’s where “underground” term was born. Imagine that in one year we played around ten times in Bandung, thoughtfully people refer us are Bandung originated band, which is not.

d) sejak Yaya Wacked dan Irvan Sembiring keluar, anda mengambil alih vocal. apakah ada kesulitan sebagai bassist dan main vocalist pada saat yg bersamaan?

After Yaya Wacked and Irvan Sembiring opted out, you took over vocal duties. Did you suffer difficulties playing as bassist and vocalist at the same time?

Jelas ini suatu faktor kesulitan yang tinggi. Tapi gue termotivasi oleh Sting dan Geddy Lee. Akhirnya semua dapat diatasi dengan latihan yang cukup.

Obviously it was very difficult. But I was motivated by Sting and Geddy Lee at that time. Finally everything went smooth by sufficient practices.

e) apakah Sucker Head sudah mempunyai sound engineer dan roadies/teknisi tetap?

Do Sucker Head have permanent sound engineer/roadies?

Belum, kita masih serabutan, tapi punya pilihan tetap apabila yang bersangkutan sedang tidak terikat dengan group lain.

Not yet. Currently we have uncommitted one, that still always with us when he’s not in other bands.

f) ada kesan di Soundrenaline 2004?

Any impression to Soundrenaline 2004?

Kebetulan Sucker Head dapat di Malang yang dalam pelaksanaanya bisa dibilang sukses. Tapi yang di Jakarta kayaknya kurang meriah, mungkin karena lokasinya nggak strategis.

We performed in Malang, East Java that was considerably thriving. I think Jakarta was less triumphant because of unfortunate location.


SONGWRITING
15 tahun Sucker Head berkiprah adalah waktu yang panjang. diantara pembaca (dan saya) mungkin belum sempat mendengarkan album2 terdahulu.

15 years of career is a long story. Perhaps readers and I don’t have chance yet to listen to previous albums.

a) apakah anda akomodatif terhadap aliran metal baru seperti pemakaian sampler & looping, bass subsonik, tuning gitar/bass extra rendah, crossgenres dll? ataukah suckerhead sekarang adalah juga yang dulu dalam hal gaya bermusik?

Do you accept new stream in metal such as sampler and loops, subsonic bass, ultra low tuning, crossover genres etc? Are Sucker Head the same as they were?

Memang style kita susah utuk diubah, kita udah terlalu matang. Tapi kita juga harus membuka diri supaya tidak ketinggalan jaman. Makanya kita pilih sistem rekaman full digital supaya paling tidak kita bisa dapatkan atmosphere jaman sekarang. Dan hasilnya ? Kita terpancing untuk connect ke midi yang akhirnya bisa memperkaya nuansa bunyi di album "Hipertensi".

We have been established so it’s quite difficult to change styles. Nevertheless we open to progression to keep it updated. That’s why we use digital recording, at least we trying to capture modern atmosphere. You can hear it in “Hipertensi” album when we employ MIDI to enrich the sound nuances.

b) berganti-ganti gitaris, dari Irvan Sembiring, Nano/Untung, ke Nano/Medi, apakah membawa perubahan ke gaya permainan dan penulisan lagu?

By changing guitarist quite often from Irvan, Nano/Untung to Nano/Medi, does it affecting playing and songwriting style?

Waktu jaman Irvan/Nano kita belum / tidak dapat membuat lagu karena ada perbedaan prinsip, makanya Irvan akhirnya menyadari bahwa dia harus bikin project sendiri yang dikenal sebagai Rotor.
Jaman Nano / Untung adalah basic musik Sucker Head sampai sekarang. Jadi pada waktu Medi menggantikan Untung, tidak terjadi perubahan yang prinsipil. selain itu gue sangat cerewet dengan arensemen ha..ha...

In Irvan/Nano era, we couldn’t write stuff since there was principal disorientation, that’s why Irvan opted out and established his own project called Rotor. While in Nano/Untung was a base of our music until now. So when Medi replaced Untung, there was no major changes happened. Beside, I’m quite fussy in arrangement ha..ha..

c) siapa yg membentuk komposisi dasar? bagaimana kontribusi member lain?

Who build basic composition? How about member contribution?

Komposisi dasar selalu dibentuk di studio (latihan) dengan sistem jamming walaupun ide sudah ada dikepala masing2 personil. Seperti jawaban diatas, selama jamming berjalan, gue mengendalikan aransemen sambil mencoba melodi lagu. Jadi semua personil bisa dikatakan memberi kontribusi yang seimbang.

It’s created in rehearsal studio when jamming though the sparkling ideas has been resided in each member’s head. During the jam I am in command of the arrangement and attempt some melodies. It can be said that all member contributes.

d) menurut anda, kapabilitas band2 indonesia dalam penulisan lagu gimana?

What’s your opinion about Indonesian band’s songwriting capability?

Rata2 sih bagus dan berbakat. Tapi finishing lagu sangat dipengaruhi oleh jam terbang dalam bermusik kan...?

Average is good and talented. After all, the finishing very much influenced by musical experience, isn’t it.

e) dari Hipertensi terkesan Suckerhead semakin tua semakin slow beat lagunya?

Talking about Hipertensi, seems like the older the softer?

Kembali ke pertanyaan a, inilah salah satu bentuk modernisasi. mana ada band metal sekarang yang main cepet lagi ? Jadi kami menterjemahkannya sebagai : walaupun beat menurun tapi kerapatan bermain dan kekasaran sound kita tambah.

Back to a) question, that’s part of modernization. Tell me are there any metal bands playing fast nowadays? So we translate it as, even though beat becomes slower, the playing solidity and rawness are denser.

f) pembaca dan kita mungkin ada yg belum mendengar album2 sebelum Hipertensi. Adakah perbedaan album2 lama dgn release terakhir? Mana yg menurut anda terbaik?

Some of us might have not heard previous albums. What’s make Hipertensi differs?

Tentu yang terakhir adalah yang terbaik secara up date, album2 terdahulu kita anggap sebagi proses dan sejarah perkembangan musik.

Definitely the latest is the best in progression. The previous albums treated as a process and musical improvement history.

DAILY LIFE
a) anda masih kontak dengan Irvan Sembiring? bagaimana kehidupan terakhir beliau?

Do you maintain contact with Irvan Sembiring, how is he doing now?

Irvan saat ini aktif berdakwah agama Islam. Dia mengabdikan diri sepenuhnya untuk agama.

Currently Irvan actively preaches Islam. His sermons dedicated all his life to the religion.

b) maaf ini agak pribadi, anda punya keluarga? bagaimana sikap mereka terhadap aktifitas bermusik?

Sorry this is somewhat personal, do you have family? Are they supportive?

Gue kawin tahun 97 dan sekarang punya anak 2. Yang paling berat adalah mendidik dan memberi pengetian kepada anak : kenapa bapaknya anak lain tiap hari kekantor, kenapa papa tidak pergi kekantor tiap hari ? Ha..ha...

I got married in 1997 and have two children. The most difficult thing is to educate and explaining my children: why other fathers go to the office every morning and their father don’t..ha..ha..

c) sebagai boss 2 label tentu anda sangat sibuk. apakah ada side job (full/part time) diluar musik? bagaimana dengan member Sucker Head yg lain?

As a boss of two labels you must be very busy. Any part/full time job outside music? How about other members?

Selain ngurus label, gue lebih sering disewa sebagi produser dan A&R.
Nano berbisnis dan buka toko handphone.
Bakar adalah drummer profesional dan guru drum
Medi membantu usaha bapaknya.

I’m usually hired as a producer and A&R. Nano have a business and cellular store, Bakar is a professional drummer and teacher. Medi supports his father’s business.

d) anda mendengarkan musik selain metal?

Do you listen outside metal?

Sebagai produser gue harus up date dengan perkembangan musik. Jadi sekarang gue dengerin semua musik.

As a producer I have to keep up-to-date with music progression. That’s why I listen to all of them.

a) siapa yang paling bertanggung jawab membentuk karakter Sucker Head?

Who’s responsible to shape Sucker Head character?

Kayaknya gue sama Nano

Me and Nano.

b) apa band/album favorit anda? Ada band local favorit?

What’s your favorite band/abum? Got local?

Gue sangat ter-influence dengan Metallica, Pantera dan Megadeth. Untuk lokalnya  gue suka Ahmad band, Edane dan Boomerang.

I’m influenced with Metallica, Pantera and Megadeth. For local scene I like Ahmad Band, Edane and Boomerang.

c) sebagai senior apa nasehat anda untuk band2 junior supaya tetap eksis dan produktif?

Could you give advice to junior to keep existence and productivity?

Semuanya tergantung dari keseriusan dalam bermusik. Jam terbang akan sangat berpengaruh terhadap kualitas. Sukses secara komersial bisa terjadi kapan aja, tapi sukses secara kualitas tidak bisa diraih dalam 1-2 album.

Everything depends on your persistence in music. Practical experience really matters to quality. Success as commercial happens anytime, but success as quality can’t be reached by one or two albums.

Entah kenapa ya, aku tuh kok selalu menantikan terus hasil karya band-band thrash metal lama indonesia. kaya' roxx,suckerhead,valhalla. Mungkin mereka hadir ketika aku remaja dan lagi gila-gilanya metal. Makanya, bung krisna terus produktif yah ...
