Can you elaborate tracking process in peach 6012 studios?
 
Tahap pertama kami rekam gitar di rumah untuk di jadikan patokan/guide take drum ( maklum waktu itu belum pakai metronom) Ga ada tehnik-tehnik khusus dalam penggarapan rekaman ini. Seperti biasa sajalah, drum dulu lantas bass, gitar rekam dua kali L 50 % & R 50 %. Waktu itu pakai program Cool Edit Pro di sertai penguat Magneto. Untuk Soundcardnya saya lupa pakai apa...Equipment yang kami pakai waktu itu : Bass/ Fender, Gitar+ pick up/Gibson+ Drum/ Tama+ Yamaha Twin Pedal+ Paiste Cymbal

First we’d recorded guitar track in home as a guide for drum take, at that time we hadn’t used metronome. There wasn’t any special technique involved. It was pretty straightforward. Drum came first, then bass, we overdubbed guitar twice and panned left and right at 50% each. I had Cool Edit Pro with Magneto plug-ins (?). I forgot what kind of soundcard we had used. For gear we use Fender bass, Gibson guitar/pickup, Tama drums + Yamaha twin pedal + Paiste cymbals.

1. studio session cukup cepat ya 12 hari untuk 5 lagu. apa itu lagu
daur ulang yg direkam kembali?

Your studio session was quick, 12 days for 5 songs. Were that recycled kind of songs?

Ya memang 12 hari saja itu pun ga full seharian, maklum saat itu pada puasa. jadi takenya selepas buka puasa. Dan kebetulan sebelum take kami sudah berlatih take di rumah pakai software yang sama seperti di studio. jadi ga makan waktu lama. Paling cuman ngesetnya aja yang makan waktu.

Yes it was only 12 days, and that’s not full day because we were at fasting in daylight so the take was started after we broke our fasting. Prior to take a record we had rehearsed in home with the same software used in studio, so everything ran smooth except the sound setting that took significant amount of time.

2. gimana ceritanya bisa dimix/master oleh Keisuke?

How’s Keisuke involved in mixing and mastering process?

Kami mendapatkan tawaran split dengan Despondency/ Infested oleh Disembowel Rec. dan mereka juga membantu untuk proses mixing dan mastering oleh Keisuke. jadi kami tinggal rekaman aja.

We got split work offer with Despondency/Infested by Disembowel Records and they helped to arrange mixing and mastering with Keisuke, we just tracked it that’s it.

3. untuk pemasaran international siapa yg pegang? bagaimana respon
pasar indonesia dan luar?

Who licensed for international market? How’s the sales going?

Dari pihak label maupun band sama-sama memasarkan kaset split ini. Dari kami untuk sementara baru terjual 250 copy terhitung juni 2005 untuk wilayah jawa tengah, bali, kalimantan timur saja.Kalau wilayah lain kami belum coba distribusikan Selain kaset Disembowel juga membuatkan kami bonus special promo CD. Mereka sengaja membuatkan untuk kami format promo CD ( seperti yang kalian terima ).

Both label and band doing marketing work for this split cassette. From us, it’s been sold 250 copies started at June 2005. That’s for Central Java, Bali, and East Kalimantan area only. For other area we haven’t tried yet. Disembowel Records also made promo CD for us just like you’re just received.

Kalau pasar international, format CDr ini yang kami sebarkan. Di wilayah Amerika di distribusikan oleh Sevared rec kurang lebih 150 copy, di Inggris distribusi oleh Disembowel via distro...( saya lupa namanya), Australia distribusi oleh Life Fluid prod., German dan eropa lainnya kami punya kerabat yang kami percaya untuk menyebar CDr kami ini kurang lebih 100 copy. Untuk wilayah nusantara, kami sendiri baru mengirim 200 copy. Responnya sangat bagus, banyak surat/ email berdatangan walau hanya sekedar korresponden atau order. Job manggung juga lumayan padat.

[Sastrawan Continues] for international market, we release CD format only. Sevared Records holds American distribution about 150 copies, UK handled by Disembowel via (I forgot the name) distro, Australia by Life Fluid Prod, for Germany and the rest of Europe we trusted our own families to distribute 100 copies approx. We receive very good response. Tons of email and letters are coming, just saying hello or want to order. The gig schedule is busy too.

4. kayaknya ada masalah teknis kecil waktu muter di player kami. lagu
belum abis tapi nomer track udah ganti?

Looks like we got a little problem in our CD player, the song hasn’t finished yet, but the track number has changed.

Ha..ha..Memang sih ada beberapa lagu yang ga mesti di potong oleh Kei, saya kurang faham kenapa begitu. Tapi Kei + Disembowel Rec sudah ngasih yang terbaik buat kami, jadi patut disukuri.

There are few songs that had been cut by Kei, and I don’t know why. But Kei and Disembowel have made the best for us, we should thank them.

5. kalian puas dengan hasil demo ini? (pemasaran/kualitas rekaman)

Are you guys happy with the results? (Sales/quality side)

Terus terang ini proyek terburu-buru. Masih jauh sekali dari standard international dan angan kami, meski masih layak untuk di perdengarkan. Secara Fisik kami saat itu sedang loyo-loyonya, bertepatan dengan puasa. Disamping itu secara mental juga kami merasa masih belum siap, belum apa-apa dan kuranag banyak berlatih. Jadi kualitas rekamanpun jadi asal-asalan alias ga maximal. Begitu juga dengan soundnya. Ditambah lagi sang operator belum pernah manangani band-band extreme metal seperi kami menambah mimpi buruk kami. Seperti kelinci percobaan.
Kalau mengenai pemasaran, kami rasa itu masih kurang menyebar.

To be honest that was rushing project. We think it’s too far from being accepted by international standard, though it’s acceptable for listening. Physically we were'nt fit due to fasting time took place (Ed: fasting month, annual obligatory for Moslem, prohibited to eat and drink at daylight only), mentally we’re unready, need more rehearsals. Same thing for the sound, the studio operator wasn’t familiar with extreme metal stuff, which made our nightmare worse. We’re like testing animal.

6. menurutmu disini adakah yg mampu mengerjakan rekaman berkualitas
profesional untuk kelas indie?

Do you think we have professional hands here to work with indie recordings?

Masih belum, jika di bandingan band-band indie mancanegara. Dari software-nya saja masih jauh ketinggalan, apalagi SDMnya. Eropa/ Amerika 20th lebih maju ketimbang kita. Masih perlu banyak belajar, balajar dan belajar.

Tapi secara kualitas lagu " mungkin " masih bisa unjuk gigi, saya suka trade/ koleksi kaset-kaset band indonesia dari berbagai genre. Dari rekaman model live sampai track. Dari yang penggarapan asal-alasan sampai yang profesional juga ada. Lihat saja banyak band-band extreme kita yang udah go international, salute buat Kekal, Siksa Kubur, Jasad, dll. mereka patut diteladani.

Not yet, compared to indie bands in foreign countries. From the software we’re lagging behind, so as the human resource. Europe / USA have been leading us 20 years ahead. We need learn and learn and learn.

But if we’re talking about song quality, yes maybe we are comparable. I love to trade Indonesian cassettes from various genres, from live to studio recording, from amateur to pro. You see lots of extreme bands here go international. I respect to Kekal, Siksa Kubur, Jasad, etc. They’re good model.

7. urusan merchandise siapa yg ngerjakan?

Who are taking care of merchandise?

Saya yang membuat semua design merchandise DVD. Begitu juga dengan distribusinya. Jadi kalau ada yang minat merch DVD, kontak saya aja deh.

8. gimana bisa kontak dengan Despondency dan Infested untuk split work?

Any story behind split work with Despondency and Infested?

Sebelumnya kami belum ada kontak apa-apa. Cuman punya CDnya aja. Yang menjadi moderator ya pihak Disembowel Rec.mereka yang bekerja keras banting tulang. hingga beserakan. thanx untuk Boy D

Actually we haven’t contact them yet, we just have the CD. We have Disembowel as medium between us and them. Disembowel worked so hard till their bones scattered around. Thanks to Boy D.

9. dimana gig yg paling berkesan? mengapa?

Where’s your memorable gig and why?

Semua rata-rata show kami asik. Tapi menurut saya paling berkesan waktu kami show di Solo " Massa Hitam # 2 ". Penonton begitu padat dan rapat, sampai-sampai saya sempat tertarik oleh penonton beberapa kali moshing di atas penonton. puiihhh... padahal waktu itu kami satu-satunya band death metal yang ada di acara black metal, gothic, doom itu.

I would say all of our shows cool. But to me the most impressive one is ‘Massa Hitam 2’ gig in Solo. The audiences were so tight and crowded leaving no single space. It was too crowded that I attracted to do moshing above them.

10. problem apa yg sering dihadapi waktu pentas? (equipment, sound, mood, crew etc

What’s your most problematic thing onstage?

Sound merupakan salah satu problem kami. Selain pengetahuan sound yang minim kami juga masih belum mampu membayar sound engineer sendiri. Mungkin suatu saat jika ada even organizer dengan berbaik hati menghargai kami dengan layak dan pantas, mungkin saja kami pakai sound engineer spesialist yang sudah mengetahui karakter musik kami. Untuk selama ini hanya wilayah jogja saja kami pakai sound engineer. 

Sound is one of our problems. We have limited knowledge about it; we can’t afford hiring sound engineer. Perhaps someday when we meet kind-hearted event organizer to appreciate us aptly, we will hire sound engineer who knew our musical character. Until now, we hire him only for Jogja area, not for all show.

11. untuk show indie adakah sound rental company yg bener2 berkompeten
dan profesional?

Do you think we have capable and professional sound rental company in indie scene?

Selama kami show, rata-rata kami pakai alat dan sound kelas 3. Belum pernah main di show kelas satu seperti Sound Adrenaline

During the whole show we’ve done, we’re using third class equipment and sound system. We never play first class something like Soundrenaline (Ed: The biggest annual sound festive in Indonesia, endorsed by cigarettes manufacturer, call it ‘Indonesian Woodstock’)

12. kalau ada kesempatan, band manakah yg kalian harap bisa sepanggung?

If you are given an opportunity, who you like to play onstage with?

Kami suka show dengan siapa saja. Tapi kalau memungkinkan sepanggung dengan Suffocation, Disgorge, DoF, Decrepit Birth lebih okay

We like to play with anyone, but it would be cooler with Suffocation, Disgorge, Deeds of Flesh, and Decrepit Birth.

13. dengan satu guitar player apa kamu rasa udah cukup untuk tampil
maksimal di live?

With only one guitar player do you think it’s enough to cover live show?

Saya rasa sudah cukup. Dengan memanfaatkan sound yang ada, kami berusaha tampil rapi, rapat, balance dan kompak.

I think yes. By optimizing any given sound system, we’re trying to play neatly, solid, balanced and cohesive.

14. gimana proses penulisan lagu? siapa yg punya ide dasar?

How’s the writing process? Who has the idea?

Biasanya gitaris atau bassist kamu yang memunculkan rootnya. lalu di rekam ke program software yang ada. lalu kami pelajari.

Our bassist and guitarist usually have the root of the song and recorded it via software, and then the rest of us learn to get into it.

15. gimana mewujudkan ide menjadi lagu utuh?

How to cook basic idea becomes full-length song?

Dari root tersebut, ada beberapa masukan. lalu di cocokan. begitu seterusnya. pattern vokalnya juga begitu. Meski membutuhkan waktu berbulan-bulan untuk menjadikan sebuah lagu yang fix

From the root song there will be some input from the band member, and then we see if it matches and continue. For vocal pattern goes the same way. Although it took months to make a perfect song, we always follow that way.

16. inspirasi menulis lagu darimana?

What inspired you to write?

Penulisan lagu biasa saya dapat dari apa yang saya lihat, dengar, rasakan. Pertama tema dahulu lalu berkembang menjadi sebuah sinopsis cerita yang kemudian saya buat menjadi sebuah lirik. tidak sampai disitu, saya juga buat gambar untuk kemudian di jadikan design merchandise kami

It came from what I see, learn and feel. First I got a theme then evolve to be outline of a story. From there I made it a lyric. It doesn’t stop there; I made proper drawing for our merchandise.

17. durasi lagu pendek2 ada maksudnya?

Your song’s very short.

Ga ada maksud apa-apa. hanya mungkin belum mampu lebih saja. Tapi lagu-lagu yang baru kami rata-rata berdurasi 3 menitan ke atas. Standard international gitu katanya...

We’re never intended to; maybe we haven’t had a competence to write it longer. But you will see in our new songs we have more than 3 minute duration. They say it’s international standard so here we go..

18. permainan kalian begitu solid. punya formal training di musik?

Your playing’s very solid. Do you have formal training?

Maunya sih gitu. Selain Mal, kami bertiga hanya begudal asal-asalan. Mal, memang kuliah jurusan per-musik-an. Dia juga Bassit untuk Cranial Incisored.

We wish we had! Except Mal, the three of us are just careless hoodlums. Mal are studying music in college. He’s also the bassist of Cranial Incisored.

19. gimana scene brutal death di jogja dan negeri kita umumnya?

How’s the brutal scene our country particularly in Jogja?

Bagus, Jogja seperti biasa adem ayem saja. daerah lain sudah pada maju pesat, Jogja masih tetep adem ayem tentrem.

Great! As usual, Jogja is cool and calm. You see other area goes forward, but Jogja stays cool.

20. 7 tahun berkarir di jalur brutal udah menunjukkan kesolidan kalian.
apakah formasi awal sama?

Do you maintain the same lineup from the start?

Hanya saya dan Topaz/drum yang sejak awal DVD berdiri. gitaris sudah bongkar pasang 6 kali, basis 2 kali. Tapi terakhir ini formasi lumayan solid kata orang-orang....

Only me and Topaz the drummer are original Devoured member. Guitarist has been replaced 6 times, bassist twice. The last lineup is quite solid, that what people said.

21. ada keinginan mencoba style musik yg lain? atau memasukkan unsur2
baru dalam elemen musik?

Have you trying new musical style? Incorporating new substance in your music?
 
Untuk saat ini mungkin belum ada kepikiran kesana, ga tau kalo besok-besok kalo udah punya cucu mungkin jadi slowly kroncong death metal. ha..ha..

I don’t think about it so far but who knows when we have a grandchild we’re become Keroncong Death Metal.

22. menurut kalian bisa nggak elemen musik tradisional dimasukkan dalam
groovy death metal?

Do you think ethnical music fit groovy death metal?

Mungkin bisa aja. Siapa tau besok jadi " brutal campursari groovy death metal ". Dan mungkin member DVD tambah banyak, ada " backing vocal Sindenist, Kendangist, Ketipungist, Serulingist "

Perhaps! Who knows tomorrow we become "brutal campursari groovy death metal". That way, Devoured member grows by adding ethnical musician backing vocal Sindenist, Kendangist, Ketipungist, Serulingist.

Ed: this question popped off my head because of Nile, US death metal band who including everything ancient Egyptian: instruments, choir,  lyrics, themes, and sound effects to create dramatic and intense, sometimes horror nuances to spicy up their brutal music. Karl Sanders, Nile's guitarist and mastermind used pre-programmed sampling stored in computer and operated via a MIDI footswitch to play egyptian parts in live show.

23. band dalam negeri yg memberi inspirasi?

Mention inspired bands!

Banyak, dari yang death metal sampai yang dangdutpun kalau jadi influence.

So many, from death metal to dangdut could be an influence.

24. sedikit mengenai latar belakang kalian, apa semua asli jogja?

A bit about your background are you guys Jogja-native?
 
Saya asli Bali, sekarang menetap di Jogja tapi saya benci makan gudeg. Topaz asli Jogja. Safik asli Cilacap, Jawa Tengah. Mal asli Gombong, Jawa Tengah.

I am Balinese now living permanently in Jogja, still I hate Gudeg(Ed: Jogja’s famous food). Safik from Cilacap, Mal from Gombong, both in Central Java.

25. diluar bermusik apa kegiatannya?

What do you do outside music?

Saya bekerja di sebuah perusahaan bergerang bidang jasa rumah sakit. disana saya di bagian staff keuangan dan administrasi.Topaz, menjabat sebagai kepala staff unit di sebuah bank konvensional di jogja. Safik dan Mal masih sama-sama kuliah.

I work in a company in hospital-related service as financing and administration staff. Topaz is a head unit of a conventional bank in Jogja, Safik and Mall are student.
