BugJet interviewed Halim Budiono, frontman and mastermind of Cranial Incisored, a unique band who choose niche underground style. Their weird and perplexed, extreme complicated and confusing music establishes Cranial Incisored as the one standing out of the metal crowd. Enjoy Halim explains his chaotic math hydrogrind style; it’s far more confusing than your high school calculus and algebra.
Background 1. Benernya apa yg ingin kamu capai Lim, kok bikin musik yg tidak lazim (bahkan untuk lingkup underground)
Bug: Actually what you want to accomplish by creating such uncommon music, even in underground scene.
Halim : yeah..justru di ug (saya lebih suka menyebutnya extreme music) inilah..dimana kebebasannya bisa ruaarrrrr biasaaaa....jadi sekalian aja maen se-extrme mungkin...
Halim: in underground (I would prefer it extreme music) scene we can get extreme freedom to create, so we make the most extreme music we can. 2. Gimana kontribusi mereka?
Bug: How do you communicate your absurd ideas to other members? How they will contribute?
Halim: Not so absurd really, it’s just plain idea just like anybody else has. That’s what I have and other members get used to it. In fact, from the beginning it was not like this. Everything ran through the process. A dissatisfaction process with the existing music at that time has leaded us to evolve into what you see and hear CI now. Looks like we’re victim of the scene huh?
Halim continued: as far as member contribution, it’s all dealing with the process too. When a new member recruited, it’ll take a significant amount of time before he can create something inside CI, but in the end, that’s make us satisfied. Mal (bassist) joined CI and he took months of rehearsal (I can’t recall my memories; it was so long and tiring). It took almost a year since the audition for him to be able to write the CI way. The result, you can check a track called “Psychoanalysis Therapy of Sybil Isabel Dorsett”, there is ¾ portion of the song that he wrote. I just made final retouch to get the most of the CI character. After that, everything flows easily.
3. Menurutmu apakah Cranial sudah dijalan yg benar? Atau nantinya akan berubah haluan?
Bug: do you think Cranial now on the right direction? Or do you see any detour?
Halim: for the direction yes, we’re on the right track, i.e. continue to explore. Try everything that CI wants to try. I personally don’t know how the future will shape our music because I think at the moment is part of the process to be different in the future. And I’m peeking ahead to draw “the sound of future” to the present time. It’s like we are stealing the future, leaping the time, something that prematurely born. It shouldn’t be here by now but we forced it to be here anyway.
Ed Note: truly excellent sentences of answer Halim! I apologize if I couldn’t translate it correctly. These phrases just knock me out! No wonder the chaotic math hydrogrind is another Cranial’s embellishment. Those sentences look like derived from Einstein’s relativity theory!
4. Apakah kamu pernah ikut formal training/sekolah gitar?
Bug: have you had formal guitar education?
Halim : Waduh, enggak. Pengennya seh getu, soale saya gak bisa baca not :( . Bisa tapi lambat, dan gak terbiasa. Saya belajar otodidak, dari melihat, dari mendengar. Dan disini referensi sangat penting...
Halim: No. I wish I had because I can’t read sheet music (I can but it’s too slow and uncomfortable). I learn by myself from listening and seeing hence references become very important.
Live 5. Dengan musik yg segini rumit, maen live mungkin tantangan tersendiri. Benar?
Bug: with this very complicated music, being live is truly a challenge, is it correct?
Halim: the real challenge for us is to proof that we can play it correctly in live situation.
6. Gimana cara audience mengapresiasi musik yg kamu mainkan saat live? Pernah mengamati mereka?
Bug: how the audiences appreciate your music during live? Have you had a chance to see them?
Halim : Ya, saya sering memperhatikan mereka.
Halim: yes I have time to see them. Mostly behave prematurely to accept our music. Some already prepare for that change, even thought they’re on a shock. The crowd usually just became frozen and quiet, unlike other live foreign band where the crowd appreciates more insanely than the music played by performers. Yep it’s too prematurely music in here, too soon to be born. That’s way they’re just perplexed.
7. Menurutmu tata suara panggung (monitor dan FOH) yg disediakan gimana?
Bug: what do you think about stage system (monitor) and FOH provided?
Halim: There you go. That’s the problem of underground gigs in this country. It’s very rarely finding decent sound system. Everything is under wattage, under powered. The sound in monitors is blinking between live and dead. In some cases monitors just dead all the time.
Ed Note: I swear if I have money I’ll establish a “professional standard” sound rental company with huge discount for underground event…haha daydreaming!
8. Pernah mengalami trouble di panggung? Solusi?
Bug: have you experienced trouble on stage? How did you overcome that?
Halim : Pernah banget!!
Halim: yes indeed! Mostly the monitor is just dead. So I just go with barely heard control from behind, follow the drumbeats. Keep on focus not to miss it. It’s so distressed to keep on thinking where the part is now being played. I try to overcome the problem after a song finished. If it couldn’t be fixed I just go ahead and stick my position near the drumkits, try to capture direct sound from it. That’s the only thing I can do.
9. Sering komunikasi dengan soundman? Bunyi sumber mana aja yg seharusnya ada dimonitormu?
Bug: do you communicate with soundman? What source should be heard on your monitors?
Halim: Sure, we bring a dedicated sound engineer for us. He already knows what I need to hear and what the other members need. For me, the drum sound is the most important but if the rest instruments added, that would be fine as long as they kept in lower level.
10. Ada gear favorit yg gak bisa ditinggalin? Setup gear kamu gimana simpelnya?
Bug: what your favorite gear you can’t live without? What you setup?
Halim: Distortion. I still can’t get the distortion I want from the amp itself. So I got some additional accessories (Ed: pedal board?) and pick 3.0 from Jim Dunlop/Stubby. The setup is quite simple from guitar to distortion accessories to power distribution (Ed: maybe a splitter box he means). I use two heads and one direct channel, that’s it. It’s not as complicated as Meshuggah setup that routes head to head and another head to head haha..beside, that gear is not available here.
Production 11. Dengar2 release CD terbentur label, belum nemu “relapse kecil” di tanah air? Gak coba homebrew (made in dhewek) aja?
Bug: what the issue behind CD release? Don’t find any “small Relapse” yet? Or try a homebrew CD?
Halim: actually not like that. Pressing CD needs lots of money. Very few indie label bands here doing it (self production or thru their label). We can’t afford producing by our own yet.
12. Keknya Isabel Dorsett tuh yang skizoprenik kepribadian ganda (multiple personality disorder)? Kenapa nulis tentang itu?
Bug: talking about lyrics, any story behind the track Isabel Dorsett whose suffer multiple personality disorder?
Didiet: From the book that we read authored by Flora Rhetta Schreiber, she wasn’t schizophrenic but her mom is. She’s a victim of her mom. A true story from a girl owns 16 personalities. We’re interested to write about her because this is one of the most complicated multiple personality case ever known to man. (Ed note: yeah, no wonder your music became sooooooo complicated too! Haha) 13. Hehe…rumit2 yah topiknya
Bug: About Felo de se, is it telling if the act of a suicide when he commits self-murder becomes commits felony?
So maaf kalo agak ga nyambung.... Didiet: this was written by our old vocalist. We don’t understand the details but apparently talking about distressed man and committed suicide. I don’t quite understand what you’re asking. (Ed note: you have answered it clearly)
14. Kamu puas dengan Rebuild (penjualan & kepuasan musikalitas)? Apa next album kayak gini juga?
Ed: Are you satisfied with Rebuild in term of sales and musicality? Does the next album sound the same?
Halim: for sales thing looks like fine, for details please check Metal Ground label, he seems to be allright :-) Musical wise, yes I’m satisfied. It was two years ago when we started it all. Kind of trial to explore, pushing the limits and tried to contribute something distinctive to local scene. For next album, of course will be progressing from what we have done two years ago. Actually we planned to release new album last year, but we just have new member lineup for drummer so the schedule is stretched quite a bit for synchronizing, rehearsal and more rehearsal.
15. Kamu puas dengan kualitas produksi Rebuild?
Bug: Are you satisfied with Rebuild production quality?
Halim : Untuk kualitas disitu SAAT ITU saya puas (2003).
Halim: At that time (2003) yes I was. I was being a rookie in recording, lots of trial and error, and panic stroked because of limited studio session budget. It was quite pleased, until nowadays when something new open our views, we just realized there’s room for quality improvement and we’ll try to be better next release.
16. Ada overdub track gitar?
Bug: did you employ track overdub for guitar?
Halim: if overdub means playing the same part twice, no we didn’t do that. But I did split different track per part detail. We didn’t overdub because the guitar session itself consumed four shifts from the total of eight.
17. Bass & Gitar, pilih todong cabinet ato direct? digital/tube/solid state amp?
Bug: for bass and guitar, do you prefer cabinet miking or direct? Digital/tube/solid state amp?
Halim: for guitar and bass we prefer miking backed up by direct. But we didn’t do it in Rebuild because lots of glitches happened in direct section. For amp I prefer tube. Bass solid state or tube is okay as long as not a digital one.
Opinion 18. Band tanah air yg paling…..?
Bug: The most…..band in Indonesia?
Halim: I like Mortal Combat (Jogja’s power violence), Mocca, Death Vomit, Forgotten, Discus, so many…and many more bands that I haven’t got a chance to listen…Indonesia has plenty of great band actually.
19. Scene Jogja menurutmu?
Bug: Describe Jogjakarta’s scene.
Halim: nowadays it’s underrated. Lots of great bands hailed in Jogja because in here, one would be playing differently than the others so every character appears specifically. Problem is, compared to other cities, we’re like drowning to the bottom of propaganda because lack of exposure. Most media dominated by specific bands from specific scenes. In fact, so many astounding bands here. I said that not because I’m in Jogja, but I have done research in other cities, attended many gigs in other cities; call it an assessment study, and I can say that Jogja always dare to be different. And we’re ready to show it off anytime.
20. Currently listening to…. All time favorite album…
Halim : Saat ini hm..apa ya: Enya "sumiregusa", Meshuggah "Catch 33", Ayumi Hamasaki "My Story", Soilwork "Stabbing The Drama", Fantomas "Suspended Animation",.. All time fave : Naked City "s/t", Melt Banana "Cell Scape" (and all that out from them!), The Dillinger Escape Plan "Calculating Infinity", Megadeth "Rust..." & "Countdown...", Loudness "Soldier of Fortune", duh...banyak kalo ini bos...
21. Ada yg ingin kamu sampaikan?
Bug: anything you wish to say?
Thanks a lot, keep support the bands that support the scene. Salut untuk bugjet.com!Hanya beberapa kepala yang bisa obyektif di Indonesia, and YOU'RE... ONE of THEM!! THANKS!
Halim: thanks a lot, keep support the bands that support the scene. Salutes to bugjet.com! Only few heads think objectively in Indonesia. And you’re on of them. Thanks. Best regards, halim budiono
