Poor Best
ImageMetalik Klinik I is the precious classic collection every metalhead should have. By listening to Metalik Klinik I and comparing to current scenes, you’ll discover some of bands evolution, from thrash to death-grind bone breaking brutal blast, death metal to “market compromise” nu metal, or from death metal to real death R.I.P. By acquiring this album, you’ll be the witness of the prolific extreme metal underground age in the 90ies, thanks to RotorCorp and all the artists who made this possible. Too late to say? Better than not at all.

Album: Metalik Klinik I
Artists: Various
Label: RotorCorp-1998
Track Listing:
1. Bluekhutuq – Ngerap
2. Betrayer – Bendera Kuning
3. Tengkorak – Konflik
4. Death Vomit – Tengkorak
5. Purgatory – Sakaratul Maut
6. Banana Split- Supermen
7. Sic Mynded – Generasi Seks
8. Hellgods – Kabut Keabadian
9. Trauma – Ciptaan Keabadian
10. Mortus – Sesat
11. Jasad – Belenggu
12. Eternal Madness – Mati Rasa
13. De Produser - Cinta

Contributed by talented and skillful musicians among others Jasad, Mortus, Trauma, Hellgods, Death Vomit, Tengkorak, Purgatory, Eternal Madness and so on, Metalik Klinik I is a living portrait of Indonesian underground metal scenes back a decade that newer generation has to proud of and be grateful for how metal should be delivered in the right way.

Aside of the true metal bands I mentioned above, other parties involved were De Produser, Sic Mynded, Banana Split and Bluekhutuq, offered breakthrough musical evolution into modern taste of heavy music industries. Those reflect something booming in 90ies from grunge by Nirvana, industrial ala Fear Factory, electronica Prodigy and Chemical Brothers, to alternative like Blur and Placebo are the short histories coloring this album.

Tengkorak, the long-time acknowledged grindcore master, truthfully showing their sharp incisors on the track, “Konflik” with heavy punk-hardcore grinding riffs as grindcore trademark, filled with short Sumatran (Minang?) lingo in between talking about street fighting among high school kids in amusing way, ”Kutumbukkan pala kau nanti!”. Eternal Madness continuing grindcore moshpit with their single “Mati Rasa” adding spicy pentatonic gamelan licks.

Thrash metaller Betrayer carrying “Bendera Kuning” in short speaking about entombment with standard simple thrash riffs easy enough to nod the head along with the rhythm as well as Mortus did on their track “Sesat”. Trauma destroy with their track “Ciptaan Keabadian” which tastes heavier with low growling vocals and killer solo.

Jasad has evolved from thrash to brutal blastbeat death metal. In Metalik Klinik I they’re in the middle way to there with “Belenggu”, an attractive demonstration of power chords speedy race with comprehensible vocals and juicy solo. While Death Vomit, one of most brutal death-grind skullcrushing blasts with frog-voiced vocals bashing moshpitting riffs in “Gelap”, in my opinion deserve the crown to be the best track on this album. It’s Fetus music with Disgorge voice! Where are Death Vomit now?

Purgatory’s song “Sakaratul Maut” lead us to the darkest gate of dying with a blend taste of melodic-chaotic death metal classics filled with creamy acoustic arpeggios in the middle and coda. It’s very different than what they are now (read their latest album review 7:172 also to compare). Hellgods open the track with 2 minutes of symphonic acoustic madness before proceed to cradle of filth-dimmu borgir type of chaos. I must admit their guitarists are hell talented arranging and playing acoustic verses despite they’re speed/black metal band playing bunch of heavy melodic riffs at the melting skin speed.

Bluekhutuq, considered to be campus stagemaster around 90ies in Surabaya and surroundings, singing (joking to be exact) “Ngerap” which is alternative/garage three-chord two-pattern song, but their lyrics are indisputably hilarious make you laughing out loud assuming you understand what the vocalist trying to tell in Javanese and Indonesian rap. The song “Ngerap” was so popular by request in that era as if there’s no Bluekhutuq exist onstage without “Ngerap”. Think of Metallica skipping “One” on their stage playlist, you bet people will go nut.

Now talking about recording quality is where this album, to me, worth to save in your player’s deck. In the digital era dominated nowadays, Metalik Klinik I sound described as fat and warm that digital always pursue to accomplish, thanks to analog processing with 2” tape reel during recording. Bass, vocals, distorted guitars, drums, and even clean/acoustic guitars sounded real fat, live and thick. Every instrument mixed properly, loud and clear. Noise is acceptable since it was done in analog. Something I don’t like is distortion character which is too harsh and a bit fatiguing. One more thing, snare drums sounds like an empty can.

Bottom line, roll back to the first paragraph.

Musicianship 5/5
Recording 4/5

FOR YOUR LIVE AND KEEP ON LINE

thanks
