The band appearance wrapped in dreadful disturbing Slipknot-type masks, full-blown tattoo and awfulness jumpsuit might lead to deceptive conclusion and judgment. They aren’t full mayhem terror troops spreading hatred and fury. Purgatory’s serenity lyrics convey positive message to remind humankind to their root of creation, where every act of creations (mankind) is counted and balanced later by the Almighty Creator on the judgment day. That’s might be the intention of choosing Purgatory name, taken from Holy Koran sura 7, order of revelation 39, The Purgatory (Al-A`arãf).

Established in 1991, Purgatory has been around with several indie label singles, albums and compilations including: Abyss Call (indie 1995), Kompilasi Metalik Klinik I-“Sakaratul Maut” single (RotorCorp-Compilation-1998), LP “Diambang Kepunahan” (Rotorcorp-1999), and their latest album which is reviewed here, “7:172” (ZR Productions-PRS Sony Music-2003)

Akin to common nu-metal style, Purgatory songs are pretty easy to follow and digest. Even though employing double guitarist, there’s no guitar solo on the album. Guitars riffing style is mediocre for heavy listeners, contains “commercial pop” riff cycled over and over by uncomplicated grooves. But in nu-metal genres, I must say the riffs are more than enough, fine indeed, compared to other Indonesian nu-metal artists (bet you know them). Some melodic bass breakdowns are written very well too. The song speed is slow enough though the double kickdrum usually played, at least when comparing to their single “Sakaratul Maut” in Metalik Klinik I, which has taste of death metal.

One of excellent skills Purgatory demonstrated on this album is the voices arrangement between harsh hardcore-style vokills, rap vocal in megaphone, woman (sampling) whispers and soft voice harmony (Purgatory has two lead vocals). The song structure comprise of several head-nodding patterns written in between sampler fills making the song less dreary in the lengthy playing time (averaged 5 minutes).

Modern sounds like loop, industrial sampler, heavy effects abuse, low strings tuning, harsh hardcore lead vocals and melodic soft vocal harmony are utilized in every song. Expect some cruel tunes and modern millennium taste like early Slipknot, Hed (pe), Static X and other nu-metal idols. Personal taste here, the MIDI shit used in several songs is somewhat overdo. It just drowns the metal character the song trying to build; making guitars became cosmetics rather than main instrument. One more thing on drums, toms/floor tom beats should appear more often I guess.

Lyrically speaking, Purgatory storytelling about spiritual messages from warning of drugs abuse, adore to the prophet Mohammed S.A.W, criticize insanity and public madness, greed and hypocrisy. The “7:172” album title was taken from Koran, Sura 7, The Purgatory (Al-A`arãf) Order Of Revelation 39, verse172, meaning that every human being is born with an instinctive knowledge about God.

English pronunciation is very good in English songs. Purgatory wrote English and Indonesian lyrics to get the most out of the song soul and seems like the vocalists deliver them well done. The guitarists also play the riffs neatly. Bass also lively follows the rhythm throughout the entire song and shows tasty solo breakdown on some parts.

7:172 was recorded in their home studio and amazingly came up with excellent production release. Drums sound especially kick/double-kick is great. It’s low, thunderous and has “click” percussive midbass tone making it so punchy. Noise is unheard. Level between instruments is balanced, every instrument level set at its proper position. Bass and vocal are amazing. I couldn’t say anything except marvelous on recording quality considering it’s a homebrew production

Regardless of themes that Purgatory convey, still their music really rocks and heavy enough in their respective metal subgenre. For nu-metal lovers, this is a must-have disc to spin.
