Burger Kill acquired by Sony Music after several years of struggling underground in Bandung extreme metal boot camp, Ujung Berung. After released several indie album and split works, Sony signed the band for 6 album contract with “Berkarat” (English: corroded) as being the first. Started their career as a straight hardcore band, Burger Kill evolved their sound into modern metalcore enriched by raw distortion, screaming guttural snarling voices, clean symphonic passages, heavy riffs and breakdown.Album: Berkarat Artist: Burger Kill Label: Sony Music-2004 Track Listing: 1. I was excited when hearing their first single “Terlilit Asa” which include unforeseen breakdown placed in uncommon beat. Unfortunately it just stops there; I couldn’t find similar “intelligence” in the rest of the tracks. “Resah Dera Jiwa” 2 minutes intro reminds me to classic metal, melodic and touchy.
Burger Kill hardcore sound has grown further into modern metalcore like Heaven Shall Burn, Caliban, As I Lay Dying, Converge or Carnal Forge stereotype. While metalcore tends to get closer to death metal heaviness nowadays (All Shall Perish is good example), Burger Kill keep their grooves and beats slow enough. They still include symphonic arrangement, solos, and clean reverberant guitars. Even I hardly heard the drummer do double kick drumming on this album. , In spite of average guitarists’ performance, standard bassline and dull drumming, I’m impressed with vocalist’s “irritating” voice’s endurance. The screaming vocals Ivan performed are similar to snarling AC/DC with emphasized throat power move along the entire songs without any sign of exhaustion.
IMHO the collaboration with platinum selling pop singer Fadly on the last track “Tiga Titik Hitam” which worthless to their original music contribution, is marketing gimmick to leverage sales; the only parameter of success when you get signed major label.
Speaking of metal production, guitar sound is the first item to be checked. My personal report: less than what I expected from big label like Sony. Excessive uncontrolled gain, less defined tones, less punchy on the low string palm-muting parts. My humble opinion the distortion is properly goes to punk bands. Maybe this is Jan Djuhana’s (producer) taste of what metal should sounds? Bass and kickdrums are mediocre and the snare sounds like 80ies hairy rock band. Overall, it’s like an independent label release with Sony name stamped on it.
