Devoured mini album materials were originally picked from three-way split work tapes, with Despondency and Infested-both are German deathsters, titled ‘Perpetual Carnage’ and ‘Zombie Massacre’. In November 2004 Devoured entered studio to record the material. With the help of Keisuke Tsuboi, a Vomit Remnants’ drummer, the mini album was mixed and mastered in VR studios Japan.

Upon receiving promo package sent by Sastrawan, Devoured’s vokiller, I immediately couldn’t resist myself to erroneously downgrade the material. Opened the cheap blue plastic case, I found unknown brand CD-R with a piece of plain art cover paper contains a bit of album details in the backside, and it’s best of all, it came from ‘never heard before’ band..

So there it was. Placed CD-R into Pioneer CD dish, rolled Denon amp volume halfway to the max and put Yamaha headphones on, all with mental-ready to hear low quality recording as my prejudice of thought upon preliminary sight of the package. Pushed play button and within next ten seconds I unintentionally had my jaws dropped!

Coping US death metal style flawlessly, Devoured brings groovy brutal death metal style from Dying Fetus to Deeds of Flesh. Hyper-energetic drumming by Topaz Anthony explodes loads of various cymbals splatter and solid machine-gun snare hits accompanying horde of low E palm-muting fretworks. The lightning speed artificial harmonics and power chords changes played by the relentless drilling hand of Safiq Rosad. To guard low register sounds punchy and groovy, bassist Sri Mulyadi adds lethal dosage of distorted subsonic as guitar riff complementary with his tight, precise and solid picking style. Guttural low-end vokill burst by Sastrawan concludes, these groovy comrades should be kept away from pregnant woman and faint-hearted people.

Those five death and groovy songs offered are short, less than two minutes duration, but the ways they wrote and deliver made them become memorable. It’s easy to fit nodding heads in unison with chaotic rhythm. Skilful musicianship and excellent song-writing, technically dazzling fretwork and drumming make these four soul machines never missed any details or false beat in their speedy race.

This mini album sounds so huge with great sound clarity and balanced mixing between instruments and voices. The records are clear, loud, great guitar distortion, tight and punchy bass and agile drums crafted from high quality studio works, and they’re all coming out of an indie label, international patronage and mostly, their own capital. Unbelievable. The only thing I dislike is slightly excessive percussion/cymbal level, makes the overall sound a little trebly and harsh.

Say no more; entangle yourself in groovy berserk and controlled chaos offered by Devoured. Definitely recommended.
