Welcome to Cranial Incisored hut, for those who prefer out of the box approach and trespassing boundaries. Here’s your refugee. This is uncommon, unorthodox, fresh breath of metal subgenre that nobody ever to think about or willing to step into. Their latest The Unfinished Interpretation of Irrational Behavior proved that Cranial is one of a kind.
Artist: Cranial Incisored Album: Rebuild: The Unfinished Interpretation of Irrational Behavior Label: Metal Ground Record Release: 2003
Track List: Rebuild-Reform-Reinstall MOZ Dissociation of Personality Artificial Intelligence Nervousness Popped of the Hook Natural Pleasure Under Pressure Full of Cripple Psychoanalysis Therapy of Sybil Isabel Dorsett Twisted History Unexplored Mind Discontent Felo De Se Experimental Thoughts as Shocker Therapy First track is very deceptive. It’s a mellow and lullaby jazz perfectly suited to accompany your bedtime stories. Next track and the rest are total destroy. Enter to the psychotic madness of obscurity. There are no directions in every song, any intro, breakdown, chorus, outro or even solo, nah. Don’t try to fit your nodding head here; headbanging thingy is unfit, perhaps Halim (mastermind and guitarist) and other members would show us how to enjoy this album, haha…. Don’t expect chug-chug, groovy old school metal riffs. There’s no room even to breathe and remember which part they’re played is. Think Decrepit Birth in Jazz mode! 14 tracks jam-packed into one side of cassette tape only and repeated on the other side. They’re short, random, absurd, and very strange songs. Every part hardly repeated. Truly unpredictable, tons of time signature, you know, those weird tempo changes. The vocals exploiting throat abuse pretty much like hardcore scream and sometimes death metal growl. Distorted guitars mostly palm-muted notes adventure picked very fast. All those bizarre songs executed perfectly tight and solid between drums, bass and guitars. Samples and jazzy clean riffs often appear spontaneously. Cranial Incisored officially cited Dillinger Escape Plan and Cephalic Carnage as major influences. I feel they’ve gone too far beyond them. Some of Dillinger’s tracks still formulated old fashioned way where melodic, harmonies and choruses and slowdown parts are included. Cephalic, who called themselves Rocky Mountain hydrogrind, idem ditto. Doom, stoner, heavy and classic death metal involved albeit their jazzy root is present. With Cranial, there’s no exception. All tracks, all parts are weird, hard to remember, shockingly absurd and randomized structure. I hardly believe how these guys wrote and remember each song correctly especially in live situation. Can’t speak too much about recording, it’s a cassette version. I have to push loudness button to clearly hear percussive and punchy bass. Vocal leveled too low between instruments. Guitar though is very loud and clear exhibit nasty crunch character. While I would admire their technical musicianship, personally, I can’t enjoy this album. It’s too complex and sophisticated for me. My blunt mind can’t digest and catch the details of fast impulse continuously exploded there. Maybe one of you who have sharp brain and jazzy-open minded approach could judge and score better. Nevertheless, Cranial is one of a kind in underground scene. It’s truly unique and separate from the crowd.
