2nCuk, pronounced as “Du-an-choke”, according to BVE (BugJet Vuk-up Encyclopedia) is a very polite Javanese phrase, more or less like “would you please”. (Example: “Duancuk, rai uwong digawe kobokan”, means “would you please get your hands off my face thank you”). 2nCuk emerged from Depok, urban city south of Jakarta. Fronted by Nico Filth who handles production, lead guitar, vocal and songwriting duties, 2nCuk has released their first full album titled “Dysfunction of Brain” (B’cex Music 2005) with lineup Randa (bass), Ican (lead guitar) and Yoza (drums).

The CD contains 9 tracks with home made paper cover and inlay but the print quality is decent. I immediately noticed that the font style in band logo and track listing is pretty damn similar to BugJet font, haha..!
Honestly when hearing the first few minutes of the first track, I feel this would be some kind of boring and uninteresting album. “Kejepit Resetling in Paris” the opening track boasts grindcore thingy rhythm with classic metal riffs in slow progression. Then something happened that keep me listening, what a big surprise, a fluidic Trey Azaghtoth-style of tremolo hell-bend solo screaming loudly! Now it’s going to be good I guess.

Cruising next tracks, I began to recognize 2nCuk’s songs pattern. More or less, overall characteristics can be described as classic death grind style though some songs exhibit doom, heavy metal, melodic power metal and black metal. Growling low end vocal but still decipherable along with easy to remember rhythm, easy listening and marketable riffs. It’s so classical that some of the riffs remind me to 80ies heavy metal. With funny lyrics (you can read them in official website), light and humorous daily life theme, 2nCuk mixed up English and Indonesian easy enough to understand what they mean.

The only downside from songwriting-wise is too much repeated, too long and lack of rhythm improvisation. The drumming pattern and tempo is steady and somewhat boring. It’s just my personal taste. Maybe they intended to write it that way (I remember some doom/stoner metal bands which progressed sooo fucking slow and boring, but that’s doom). Aside form that, what make 2nCuk worth to listen and enjoy are the guitar overlays and solos. It’s so tasty, mind blowing, face melting and fluidic. The solo mostly utilizes high note bending, making guitar screaming like the sopranos from hell. Added a proper amount of reverb makes it’s so classical and vintage.

Another big shot is “A Stupid Mind and Dirty Body” track. It’s fully crossed over genre from screaming black metal voices, power metal tremolo picking riffs, 80ies metal and duel guitar harmony. The way they compose this song structure is great. Again, solo is fucking awesome! Truly these guys have talent and potential. The way they expressing their ideas in this first album look promising.

Production wise I would call this a demo CD. Overall level is weak, mushy guitars and drums especially the kick sounded thin, like John Bonham drumkits way back in the 70ies (is it intentional?). Guitar rhythm is full distorted and looks like there’s no overdub make its sound skinny and undefined.

Bottom line, 2nCuk offers easy riffs, great mind blowing solos and friendly to remember songs. One task left to 2nCuk: hire a professional recording engineer and God bless your career.
